For Managers, Supervisors and Nurses

1- Day Seminar

While almost all aspects of the Manager, RN and RPN roles have changed in long term care, one of the most significant changes has been the need for enhanced leadership competencies. Faced with increasingly complex care, a more diverse resident population, and minimal changes in resources, managers and supervisors must demonstrate exceptional leadership skills in order to facilitate teamwork among both their peers and the staff.

This 1-Day session focuses on the core leadership competencies required of managers and supervisors charged with overseeing the provision of care to long term care residents in the face of such challenges. By incorporating essential leadership practices, participants will be better able to coordinate the delivery of care, improve communication, foster improved relationships, inspire excellence, and assertively hold others accountable to ensure that excellence in care and quality service is achieved.

Key knowledge areas in the Fundamental Leadership in Long Term Program include the following:

  • Aligning and using Mission, Vision and Values
  • Empowerment – self and others
  • Relationship building
  • Assertiveness
  • Motivation and inspiration
  • Collaborative problem solving

Participants will learn and apply new leadership skills through a process of in-class instruction and demonstrations, group work and role-playing.

Darlene Legree and Ron Martyn co-facilitate the training day, covering all the material in the session. The participants benefit from the diversity of presentation styles, different sets of skills, and the provision of additional support to participants as they practice leadership skills during the training day. An audience response system further engages learners throughout the session.

The Home will receive an evaluation report summarizing learning outcomes from training day, as well as any participant comments.
